My Why

Personal Growth Work Isn't Magic

But for me, it is ESSENTIAL to living life to its fullest. Is personal growth easy? Nope, it's frustrating AF. So what's my Why? Read on my friend ...

There is a constant battle within me to stay in my comfort zone and suffer or journey through growth into expansion of a more fulfilling life. I believe we are hard wired to pursue our passions and seek loving community. The suffering comes because despite this hard wiring, our desire to be safe and conserve energy often prevails. And not because it's a stronger desire, but because we are so distracted and drained by media (social and otherwise), the world wide web, our devices and our busy-ness that we can't even hear the call from our spirit that we were meant to do more, to be more.

When we become discontent enough, we might just begin to hear that call. The call will tell you to make a choice: live with the discomfort of growth or pain of regret. And when it comes to growth, the only way out is through - through your self-imposed roadblocks, old habits, old ways of thinking and being.

The good news: personal growth is not about having to find/add/multiply who or what you are. It's about peeling away the layers Shrek. It's Michelangelo's famous quote:

"I created a vision of David in my mind and simply carved away everything that was not David."

What do habits have to do with all of this personal growth talk?

Lots! Habits account for 40% of every action, every thought we have every day. It's basically our life on auto-pilot. Most of us aren't even aware of what habits we have. So, there's tremendous value in making our habits work and align with what we want out of life.

Second, due to the auto-pilot nature of habits, they help us conserve a ton of energy, mostly mental energy, that we would otherwise use in making all those decisions. Can you imagine how much energy you would lose over your lifetime if you debated with yourself whether or not to brush your teeth every day? You get up, you do the thing, you move on with your day. Conserving energy!

Third, when our most effective habits create health and wellbeing, WE FEEL GREAT! We have energy to spend on our people and our passions.  We WANT to show up and make a difference. Making a difference makes us HAPPY.

Lastly, making and sticking with efficient, healthy habits creates a positive feedback loop. We gain confidence in our ability to transform and keep commitments. Then, we are many times more likely to succeed at other promises we make to ourself.
